mini1541
mini1541 UIEC in a box
I'm always on the lookout for neat and innovative c64 products. About a month ago I ordered the UIEC from Jim Brain Designs.
His design is no lightweight in the c64 storage market. It includes JiffyDOS and the ability to store up to 32GG!
It comes packaged up in a small hardware footprint. Jim's device plugs into the 'Tape Drive' port for power. That way it stays out of the way of your cartridges, etc.
After mine arrived, I decided it needed a case of some sort. I did a quick Google search to see what others were doing. Lots of neat hacks, but nothing off-the-shelf to buy that I really liked. So I decided to attempt to make my own!
Oddly enough while heading out to the garage to see if I could find a plastic case, I glanced at the alarm system trigger box on my door.

Hmm... This looks suspiciously like a little 1541!
So after all the cutting, tweaking and several tubes of JBWeld, this is what I came up with.

say... that kinda looks like a little 1541! It's an "Ademco 5816" door/window transmitter.

(btw, the LEDs on the front are 100% functional. We had to take several pictures to catch the Red one 'on')
Please chime in and let me know what you think!

thanks guys! took me forever to figure out _where_ the little uIEC would fit. lots of JBWeld, dry for 4 hours, cut, and re-JBWeld. and then when I made a 1/2mm mistake, it *really* stood out! :O
wizardnj: i wish i could make more, easily! would be a fun kit if the price could be kept down. maybe I can make a stencil-kit people could print out, then cut-out themselves.. ? also, I'm putting your Protocart through it's paces! great life-saver product. i'll post pix soon!
fritske: http://www.radio6581.com forever!! :D its like plugging into 1985, and flooring it to 88mph!

That is real neat. How did you do the lable for the 1541? I guess take a photo and print it smaller and glue it on?
On Amazon they have the part http://www.amazon.com/Ademco-5816-Honeywell-Wireless-Transmitter/dp/B0006BCCRM $20!

Ray: I drew it pixel-by-pixel in MS Paint. Its about 155x20. printed and tweaked on normal ink jet paper until it looked right. Then I printed it out on 'label' type sticky paper. Initially it didn't stick very well because the paint is a crinkle finish (less actual surface area), so I used a glue stick to add extra sticky and fill in the gaps. I'll send you my MS Paint file if you want to use it, or modify for something else. I have a little version I printed and stuck on my iPhone. :)

You do not have a photo of how the back looks. This does looks like a little 1541 good job.
I think if I did it I would take a photo of a real 1541 and print it down to the right size.

Ray: thanks! I'll take some more pix so you can see the whole thing. I color-matched the header wires that exit the back to match the c64 theme. :)
